Separate specialists from Grade 9

CBSE’s own paper is split the same way. The 2026-27 Class 10 Science sample question paper has 39 questions in three sections: Section A is Biology, Section B is Chemistry and Section C is Physics.

In both years the 20 internal-assessment marks are set by the school: Periodic Assessment, Multiple Assessment, Portfolio and Subject Enrichment (Practical Work), 5 marks each. The Class 10 theory paper puts 50% of marks on knowledge and understanding, 30% on applying concepts, and 20% on analysing, evaluating and creating, with an internal choice in about a third of the paper. Some Class 10 topics are assessed only formatively, not in the year-end exam: Periodic Classification of Elements; Evolution; and Motor, Electromagnetic Induction and Electric Generator. Two-level Science from 2026-27
From 2026-27, CBSE offers Science at two levels, according to the Secondary Curriculum 2026-27:
- Science (standard) is compulsory for every student: the common 80-mark, 3-hour exam, plus 20 marks of internal assessment.
- Science Advanced is optional, for students who want to study additional topics: an extra 25-mark, 1-hour paper of higher-order thinking questions (Grade 9 Advanced syllabus). It runs in Class 9 from 2026-27 and reaches the Class 10 Board exam in 2027-28, so the first two-level Class 10 boards are in 2028. Its marks are not added to the overall total.
- Class 10 in 2026-27 stays on the existing scheme, with one Science paper.

Science Advanced is an optional extra paper of 25 marks in 1 hour, made up of higher-order thinking questions. It starts in Class 9 in 2026-27 and reaches the Class 10 Board exam in 2027-28. Its marks are not added to the overall total. Students in Class 10 in 2026-27 stay on the existing single Science paper.
Are any Class 10 Science topics left out of the board exam?
Yes. CBSE’s 2026-27 Class 10 Science syllabus lists some topics as assessed only formatively, not in the year-end exam: Periodic Classification of Elements; Evolution; and Motor, Electromagnetic Induction and Electric Generator. They are still in the syllabus and can count towards internal assessment.
Can my child improve their Science mark in the May board exam?
Yes, if eligible. The February exam is the main one. The May exam is optional, and eligible students can use it to improve up to three subjects out of Science, Mathematics, Social Science and the languages. Both exams cover the full syllabus.
