CBSE or ICSE? A guide for families in the UAE

CBSE and ICSE are both Indian school boards, and families in the UAE follow both. Neither is better for every child. CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) gives a tighter, more focused set of board subjects and, from 2026, two chances at the Class 10 board exam. ICSE, run by CISCE (the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations), asks for a wider spread of subjects, more English and more written answers. The right choice depends on how your child learns and writes, and on which schools near you offer each board.

The short answer

  • Neither board is “harder” across the board. They test differently. ICSE leans on breadth, English and long written answers. CBSE keeps the board subjects tighter.
  • Both mark most subjects 80 + 20. In each board, a main subject is usually 80 marks for the external exam and 20 for internal assessment by the school.
  • The Class 10 exam calendars differ. CBSE runs a compulsory main exam from mid-February and an optional May exam to improve up to three subjects. ICSE runs its main exam in February and March, with a same-year Improvement Examination in up to two subjects.
  • After Class 10, the names change. CBSE continues to Class 12. On the CISCE side, Class 10 is the ICSE and Class 12 is the ISC.

How the boards differ in the classroom

ICSE is broader, wordier and more written than CBSE. You see it in the subject list and in the papers.

  • English carries more weight in ICSE. English is compulsory, and at ICSE level it is two separate papers: English Language and Literature in English, each a two-hour paper of 80 marks plus 20 for internal assessment.
  • ICSE asks for more subjects. Every ICSE candidate enters at least six subjects, with English compulsory, plus Socially Useful Productive Work (SUPW) and Community Service assessed by the school. History, Civics and Geography is a compulsory group. Students then choose two or three Group II subjects, such as Mathematics, Science, Economics or a modern foreign language, and CISCE’s Regulations say candidates are expected to normally offer both Science and Mathematics.
  • CBSE keeps the board subjects focused. Class 10 board subjects are the two languages, Mathematics, Science and Social Science. Starting with Class 9 in 2026–27, CBSE also adds a third language and Computational Thinking and AI, both assessed in school.
  • Answers look different. ICSE papers reward longer, well-organised written answers. CBSE papers mix shorter and longer questions, so precision and speed matter.

Exams and milestones

CBSE

From 2026, CBSE Class 10 has two board exams a year. The first, from mid-February, is compulsory. The second, in May, is optional: eligible students can use it to improve up to three subjects out of Science, Mathematics, Social Science and the languages. Internal assessment happens once, before the main exam. Our guide to the two CBSE board exams explains who can sit the May exam and how results work.

From the 2028 Class 10 boards, every student sits one common paper in Mathematics and in Science (80 marks, three hours) and can add an optional one-hour Advanced paper of 25 marks in either or both. Advanced marks are not added to the total.

ICSE and ISC

CISCE expects the ICSE Year 2027 exams in February and March 2027, and results in May 2027. ICSE theory papers last two or three hours, depending on the subject.

  • Passing: a student needs 33% in a subject to pass it. To get a pass certificate, they must sit at least six subjects and pass at least five, including English, and get a pass grade in SUPW.
  • Improvement Examination: held in the same year as the main exam. A student who sat the main exam can take it in a maximum of two subjects. Schools register students in June or July.
  • Class 9: the Class 9 final exam is set by the school, not by CISCE.

In 2026, 2,58,721 students appeared for the ICSE exam and 99.18% passed; for the ISC, 1,03,316 appeared and 99.13% passed (CISCE figures).

Availability in the UAE

Not every Indian-curriculum school offers both boards. Before you plan around a board, check the specific school’s affiliation on the board’s own list:

In Dubai, private schools are registered and regulated by KHDA (the Knowledge and Human Development Authority), in Abu Dhabi by ADEK (the Department of Education and Knowledge), and in Sharjah by the Sharjah Private Education Authority. In Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, the federal Ministry of Education registers private schools. The school itself can tell you which board it is affiliated to.

Which suits which child?

These are tendencies, not rules.

  • ICSE often suits a child who reads widely, enjoys writing, and copes well with a larger number of subjects.
  • CBSE often suits a child who prefers a tighter subject list and steady practice on exam-style questions, and families who want the extra May chance in Class 10.
  • Either can work for a strong student. The bigger risk is a mismatch between the board and the child’s writing and reading habits, which shows up most in Classes 9 and 10.

How we teach each board

We teach both boards, in separate batches. CBSE students learn in CBSE batches, and every ICSE grade has its own batches, teachers and assessment, so nothing is borrowed from the other board.

  • CBSE tuition: Grades 3 to 12, following the CBSE year from April to March, with placement at any point in the year.
  • ICSE tuition: ICSE and ISC, with English Papers I and II marked separately, practice in longer written answers, History & Civics and Geography taught as distinct papers, internal assessment supported, and Grades 9 and 10 taught as one arc.

The fee is the same for both: AED 450 a month, excl. 5% VAT, for five subjects, one each weekday, in a class of up to six. Classes are live and last 55 minutes, Monday to Friday, in a slot between 2:00 PM and 9:00 PM GST. Board-year batches (Class 10 and Class 12) are taught only by teachers with board-exam experience.

Questions parents ask

Is ICSE harder than CBSE?

Not across the board. ICSE asks for more subjects, more English (two separate papers) and longer written answers, so it can feel heavier for a child who doesn’t enjoy writing. CBSE keeps the board subjects tighter. Both use the same 80 + 20 split for most subjects.

Which board is better for a child in the UAE?

Neither is better for every child. Look at how your child reads and writes, and at which board the nearby schools offer. You can check any school’s board on CBSE’s SARAS list or the CISCE school locator.

What is the difference between ICSE and ISC?

Both are run by CISCE. ICSE is the Class 10 exam, and ISC is the Class 12 exam. At ISC level, English is compulsory along with three, four or five elective subjects.

Does ICSE have a second chance like CBSE’s May exam?

Yes, in a different form. CISCE holds an Improvement Examination in the same year as the main exam, in a maximum of two subjects. CBSE’s optional May exam allows improvement in up to three subjects.

When are the ICSE 2027 exams?

CISCE lists the ICSE Year 2027 exam period as February to March 2027, with results expected in May 2027. Check cisce.org for the date sheet.

What is the pass mark in ICSE?

33% in each subject. For a pass certificate, a student needs to sit at least six subjects, pass at least five including English, and get a pass grade in SUPW.

Does Progmetics teach both CBSE and ICSE?

Yes, in separate batches with separate teachers. The fee is the same for both: AED 450 a month, excl. 5% VAT, for five subjects.
