What Class 12 Physics asks for this year
Class 12 Physics (code 042) is marked out of 100: a 70-mark, three-hour board theory paper, plus a 30-mark practical examination. Here is where CBSE puts the 70 theory marks in 2026–27:
| Units | Chapters | Marks (of 70) |
|---|---|---|
| Electrostatics; Current Electricity | Electric Charges and Fields; Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance; Current Electricity | 16 |
| Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism; Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Currents | Moving Charges and Magnetism; Magnetism and Matter; Electromagnetic Induction; Alternating Current | 17 |
| Electromagnetic Waves; Optics | Electromagnetic Waves; Ray Optics and Optical Instruments; Wave Optics | 18 |
| Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter; Atoms and Nuclei | Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter; Atoms; Nuclei | 12 |
| Electronic Devices | Semiconductor Electronics: Materials, Devices and Simple Circuits | 7 |
The paper: 33 compulsory questions in five sections. Section A has sixteen one-mark questions (twelve multiple-choice and four assertion-reason). Section B has five two-mark questions, Section C seven three-mark questions, Section D two four-mark case studies, and Section E three five-mark long answers. There’s internal choice in some questions but no overall choice. No calculators.
The kind of question: CBSE’s design puts about 38% of the marks on remembering and understanding, 32% on applying, and 30% on analysing, evaluating and creating. Learning the derivations by heart covers less than half the paper.
What makes Class 12 Physics hard
- Two units are half the paper. Magnetism and induction (17 marks) and Optics with electromagnetic waves (18) together make 35 of the 70. They are also the most abstract chapters of the year.
- Numericals without a calculator. The paper gives the constants; your child does the arithmetic by hand, quickly, in powers of ten.
- Derivations that have to be exact. A long answer is built step by step, and a missing step costs marks.
- Thirty per cent of the marks are for thinking, not recall. Case studies and assertion-reason questions test whether a concept has been understood, not memorised.
- Grade 12 is not the year to discover a Grade 11 gap. Much of Class 12 builds on Class 11 mechanics, vectors and calculus. We treat both years as one continuous programme.
Numericals, derivations and practicals
Numericals and derivations are worked through in live classes with a Physics specialist, not watched on a recording.
The practical exam takes place in your child’s school, not online. The 30 marks are made up like this:
| Practical component | Marks |
|---|---|
| Two experiments, one from each section | 7 + 7 |
| Practical record (experiments and activities) | 5 |
| One activity | 3 |
| Investigatory project | 3 |
| Viva on experiments, activities and project | 5 |
The record must include at least 8 experiments and 6 activities, plus the project report. The experiments themselves are done in the school lab, so plan the record and project with your child’s school from the start of the year.
Board-exam technique and past papers
CBSE publishes a sample question paper and marking scheme for Class 12 Physics every year. The 2026–27 papers are out (September 2026), free, and the closest thing to the real paper. Our board preparation uses past papers, marking schemes and timing under pressure, so your child learns where each mark sits.
Class 12 has one main board examination. The two-sittings system CBSE introduced in 2026 is for Class 10 only. A supplementary examination later in the year is for eligible students, not a second attempt to plan around. CBSE publishes the date sheet on cbse.gov.in. It had not been published when this page was written.
We do not promise a mark. Board preparation is past papers, timed practice and answer technique, so that the real paper holds fewer surprises.
How the class works and who teaches it
- A Physics specialist. Our Science teaching splits into Physics, Chemistry and Biology specialists from Grade 9.
- Board-experienced teachers. Board-year batches are taken by board-experienced staff only.
- One-to-one, or a group of three. Specialised Subjects is for “the child who is fine everywhere except one subject”. The pace is set by your child, not by a syllabus calendar.
- Your school’s order. We follow the calendar your child’s school follows.
- Open doors. You can join any class, at any time, without notice. One-to-one classes run without a parent present only after you’ve given consent once, by replying to the enrolment email.
- Change teacher or timing at no charge, subject to a free seat.

Questions parents ask about Class 12 Physics
How is CBSE Class 12 Physics marked?
Out of 100: a 70-mark, three-hour board theory paper, plus a 30-mark practical examination. The 30 practical marks cover two experiments, an activity, the practical record, an investigatory project and a viva.
Which units carry the most marks in Class 12 Physics?
In CBSE’s 2026–27 syllabus, Electromagnetic Waves and Optics together carry 18 of the 70 theory marks, Magnetism with Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Current 17, Electrostatics with Current Electricity 16, Dual Nature, Atoms and Nuclei 12, and Electronic Devices 7.
Are calculators allowed in the Class 12 Physics board exam?
No. CBSE’s 2026–27 sample paper says calculators are not allowed, so numericals have to be worked by hand, with the physical constants the paper provides.
Where does the Physics practical exam take place?
In your child’s school, not online. The experiments are done in the school lab, and the 30 practical marks also cover the practical record, an investigatory project and a viva.
Does Class 12 have two board exams, like Class 10?
No. The two-exam system CBSE introduced in 2026 is for Class 10. Class 12 has one main board examination, with a supplementary examination later in the year for eligible students.
How much does Class 12 Physics tuition cost?
Physics on its own is available through Specialised Subjects: AED 600 a month one-to-one, or AED 500 a month in a group of three, excl. 5% VAT. No registration fee and no annual contract.
Who teaches Class 12 Physics?
A Physics specialist. Our Science teaching splits into Physics, Chemistry and Biology specialists from Grade 9, and board-year batches are taken by board-experienced staff only.
