What Class 10 Maths actually asks for this year

Class 10 Maths is one 80-mark, three-hour board paper, plus 20 marks of internal assessment that the school runs. That is the whole of it. No surprises, but very little slack.

The 2026–27 syllabus is the same for Standard and Basic. Here is where CBSE puts the 80 marks:

UnitMarks (of 80)
Number Systems (Real Numbers)6
Algebra (Polynomials, Pair of Linear Equations, Quadratic Equations, Arithmetic Progressions)20
Coordinate Geometry6
Geometry (Triangles, Circles)15
Trigonometry (Introduction, Identities, Heights and Distances)12
Mensuration (Areas Related to Circles, Surface Areas and Volumes)10
Statistics and Probability11

Algebra alone is a quarter of the paper. A child who is shaky on quadratics in October is not “a bit behind”. They are behind on a quarter of the marks.

The internal 20 marks are split three ways: pen-and-paper tests and multiple assessment (10), a portfolio (5) and lab practicals (5). They are marked at school, not at the board, and they are the easiest marks in the year to lose by simply not handing things in.

The paper itself: 38 compulsory questions in five sections, from one-mark multiple-choice and assertion-reason questions up to five-mark long answers and four-mark case studies. No calculators.

Standard vs Basic Maths: which paper, and why

Same chapters. Same 80 marks. Same three hours. The difference is the kind of question.

  • Basic (241): about 75% of the marks test remembering and understanding. About 15% test applying, and 10% analysing and evaluating.
  • Standard (041): about 54% remembering and understanding, 24% applying, and 22% analysing, evaluating and creating.

CBSE designed Standard for students who want to take Mathematics further, and Basic for those who don’t.

The Class 11 question. CBSE’s standing rule is that Basic students may take only Applied Mathematics in Class 11, not Mathematics. Since its circular of 27 May 2025, CBSE has relaxed that: a Basic student may take Mathematics in Class 11 if the school is satisfied they have the aptitude. CBSE also says the relaxation ends once its new scheme of studies takes over. So don’t choose Basic assuming the door stays open. Ask the school.

If your child is already in Class 10, the choice has probably been made. Schools register each student’s subjects with CBSE in the List of Candidates, and the 2026–27 deadline fell in October 2026. If you are not sure which paper your child is registered for, ask the school before you book anything.

This is the last year of Standard and Basic. CBSE has discontinued the two papers for students who started Class 9 in 2026–27. This year’s Class 10 stays on the existing scheme. From 2027–28, Class 10 has one Mathematics paper, plus an optional one-hour, 25-mark Mathematics Advanced paper whose marks are not added to the total. If you have a child in Class 9, our CBSE 2026–27 changes guide explains what comes next.

Two board sittings: what they mean for Maths

  • The first exam is compulsory. It starts in mid-February. Nobody skips it to “wait for May”.
  • The second exam is in May, and it’s for improvement. Eligible students may improve up to three subjects out of Science, Mathematics, Social Science and the languages. Both exams cover the full syllabus.
  • A student who misses three or more subjects in the first exam can’t take the second one.
  • The 2027 dates: CBSE publishes the date sheet on cbse.gov.in. It had not been published when this page was written.

Our view: treat February as the exam. May is a second chance at Maths, not a plan. A child who aims at May arrives underprepared twice.

The full rules for both exams are in our guide.

How our Class 10 Maths classes run

  • Live, small, and separate. Standard and Basic are taught in separate batches of at most six children. Six is the ceiling, not the target.
  • 55 minutes, the same rhythm every time. Recall last class (5 minutes), teach the new idea on a shared whiteboard (25), practise live while the teacher watches the screens (15), a short live check (8), then homework set (2).
  • Monday to Friday, 2:00–9:00 PM GST. You choose the slot, and you can change it at no charge if a seat is free in the batch you want.
  • Part of the core plan. Maths is one of the five core subjects in Regular Online Tuitions, which teaches one subject each weekday. That means one live Maths class a week, four a month. If your child needs more Maths time than the core plan gives, add Specialised Subjects (below).
  • Maths specialists. Separate Maths teachers teach Grades 9–12, and board-year batches are taken by board-experienced staff only.
  • Homework you can live with. Around twenty minutes after each class: a short video and a quiz.
  • You can see it working. Live assessment scores from every class, chapter-level reporting, attendance alerts after two missed classes, and board-exam readiness reviews from Grade 9.
  • Open doors. You can join any class, unannounced.

Past papers and marking-scheme technique

CBSE publishes a sample question paper and a marking scheme for both Standard and Basic every year. The 2026–27 papers are out (published September 2026). They are free, and they are the closest thing to the real paper your child will see.

We follow the order your child’s school follows through the syllabus. Past papers under timed conditions start in the second term, and we prepare students for both board sittings.

Board preparation means past papers, marking schemes and timing under pressure. Then comes the part most students skip: marking-scheme technique, meaning where the marks actually sit. CBSE’s 2026–27 marking scheme awards Maths marks step by step, often in half marks. A correct method with a slip at the end still earns most of the marks. A right answer with no working may not.

We do not promise a number. Board preparation is past papers, timed practice and answer technique, so that the real paper holds fewer surprises.

Questions parents ask about Class 10 Maths

How much is online CBSE Class 10 Maths tuition with Progmetics?

Maths is included in Regular Online Tuitions: AED 450 a month, excl. 5% VAT, for five subjects, one each weekday, in live classes of at most six. That is one Maths class a week, four a month. For Maths on its own, Specialised Subjects costs AED 600 a month one-to-one or AED 500 a month in a group of three, excl. 5% VAT.

Do you teach Standard and Basic Maths separately?

Yes. In Class 10, Standard and Basic Mathematics are taught in separate batches, because the two papers ask different kinds of questions.

Is Basic Maths easier than Standard Maths?

The syllabus and the marks are the same: an 80-mark, three-hour board paper plus 20 marks of internal assessment. The difference is the question mix. In CBSE’s 2026–27 design, about 75% of Basic marks test remembering and understanding, against about 54% in Standard. Standard puts more marks on applying and analysing.

Can a student who takes Basic Maths in Class 10 study Maths in Class 11?

Under CBSE’s circular of 27 May 2025, yes, if the school is satisfied the student has the aptitude for it. CBSE says that relaxation ends once its new scheme of studies takes over, and the standing rule is Applied Mathematics only for Basic students. Ask your school before you decide.

Can my child resit Maths in the second board exam in May?

Yes, if they sat the first exam. CBSE lets eligible students improve up to three subjects out of Science, Mathematics, Social Science and the languages in the second exam. A student who missed three or more subjects in the first exam cannot take the second one.

Is 2026–27 the last year of Standard and Basic Maths?

Yes. CBSE has discontinued Standard and Basic for students starting Class 9 in 2026–27. Students in Class 10 in 2026–27 stay on the existing scheme. From 2027–28, Class 10 has one Mathematics paper, plus an optional 25-mark Mathematics Advanced paper.

When are the classes, and how long are they?

Monday to Friday, in a slot you choose between 2:00 PM and 9:00 PM Gulf Standard Time, with a different subject each weekday, so Maths is one class a week. Each class is 55 minutes, taught live, with at most six children.

Can I watch a class before we pay?
